Thanks for your blog. I am struggling with a similar situation with my daughter who recently returned after her father and I had been divorced and unfortunately split the kids. It is surprisingly painful when the infrastructure attempting to protect kids doesn’t recognize this deep bond of mother and daughter that we share. It has hit me several times in the past months as we make this transition (and registering for school, applying for passports, health insurance) are all reminders that we’re not quite “official”. No one is contesting my caring for her, and I have to keep reminding myself that being a mother to her is natural and right regardless of official recognition.

Hi Carmel, thanks for reading. It can be very draining having to explain what should be personal when trying to do everyday essential tasks for your family! I hope your daughter settles okay, I’m sure this is a difficult time for all involved.
